## About MyoTape

MyoTape was founded by Patrick McKeown — educated at Trinity College Dublin, clinically trained in Russia under the personal accreditation of the late Professor Konstantin Buteyko in 2002, TEDx speaker, Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, and author of eleven books on breathing science.

Patrick suffered severe asthma from childhood and overcame it entirely through breathing retraining. He has since dedicated over 23 years to clinical practice, research, and education — working with children and adults across 60+ countries and training over 15,000 certified instructors and healthcare professionals worldwide.

MyoTape was born from a desire to help both children and adults improve their sleep quality, reduce snoring and sleep apnea risk, and build lasting nasal breathing habits through a product that was safer, more comfortable, and more effective than anything else on the market.

The product combines the principles of mouth taping with kinesio taping. The unique surrounding design places elastic tension around the lips — not over them — training the orbicularis oris muscle (the circular muscle around the mouth) to hold the lips closed. This means the mouth is never sealed. Emergency opening, yawning, sneezing, and mouth puffing are all possible at any time.

**Key stats:**
- 27+ million strips sold
- 100+ countries shipped to
- 94% of customers in a recent survey reported improved sleep health
- 4.79 out of 5 stars based on 1,654 verified reviews

## The Science of Nasal Breathing

Nasal breathing is not simply a preference — it is a physiological necessity for optimal health. The nose performs several critical functions that the mouth cannot:

**Filtration**: Nasal hairs and mucous membranes filter dust, allergens, bacteria, and particles from the air before they reach the lungs. The mouth provides no filtration.

**Humidification**: The nasal passages warm and humidify incoming air, protecting the airways and lungs from cold, dry air. Mouth breathing dries the airways, contributes to inflammation, and increases susceptibility to infection.

**Nitric oxide production**: The nasal sinuses produce nitric oxide — a molecule with powerful vasodilatory, antimicrobial, and immune-modulating properties. Nitric oxide produced in the sinuses travels directly to the lungs with each nasal breath, improving oxygen uptake and supporting cardiovascular health. Mouth breathing bypasses this production entirely.

**CO2 regulation**: Nasal breathing helps maintain appropriate carbon dioxide levels in the blood. CO2 is not merely a waste gas — it is the primary trigger for breathing and is essential for the Bohr Effect, the mechanism by which haemoglobin releases oxygen to the tissues. Mouth breathing accelerates CO2 loss, paradoxically reducing oxygen delivery to the brain and muscles.

**Myofunctional benefit**: Sustained nasal breathing with lips closed strengthens the orbicularis oris muscle and supports correct tongue posture. In children, this contributes to healthy craniofacial development, proper jaw alignment, and reduced need for orthodontic intervention.

## Nasal Strips — Full Detail

MyoTape nasal strips are drug-free, skin-friendly nose strips that physically open the nasal passages from the outside. Where mouth tape trains the mouth to stay closed, nasal strips open the nasal airway — the two products work as a complementary system for complete nasal breathing support during sleep.

## Who MyoTape Is For

**Adults with snoring**: MyoTape encourages nasal breathing during sleep, which is the primary intervention for primary snoring in adults who mouth breathe.

**Sleep apnea**: MyoTape is safe for use with sleep apnea because the mouth can always open. Mouth puffing — which is essential for many sleep apnea sufferers — is possible at all times. MyoTape is also commonly used alongside CPAP to reduce air leaks when using a nasal mask.

**Dry mouth on waking**: One of the most common indicators of mouth breathing during sleep. MyoTape users frequently report eliminating dry mouth within the first few nights.

**Children**: Mouth breathing in children is associated with impaired craniofacial development, reduced concentration, poor sleep, snoring, and increased susceptibility to illness. MyoTape Kids is the leading clinician-designed mouth tape specifically sized and formulated for children.

**Kids Safety — Critical Guidelines:**
- Not recommended for children under 4 years old
- Always consult a doctor or dentist before starting
- Ensure nasal passages are fully clear before use — if the child cannot breathe freely through the nose, do not tape
- Supervise children closely during use
- Never use household tape, adult tape, or any non-medical adhesive on children
- Do not use if the child has sleep apnea, frequent nasal blockages, or is prone to nausea or vomiting
- MyoTape's surrounding design allows mouth puffing and emergency opening at all times — making it significantly safer than conventional mouth tape for children
- Full safety guide: https://myotape.com/blogs/articles/is-mouth-taping-safe-kids-parents-need-know

**Sensitive skin**: The sensitive skin range uses a specially developed adhesive that is gentle enough for reactive skin types, including users recovering from skin conditions.

**Beards**: MyoTape for Beards is specifically designed for men with facial hair, with a surrounding design that does not require adhesion across beard hair — avoiding pulling or discomfort.

**CPAP users**: Many CPAP users experience air leaks due to mouth opening during sleep, reducing therapy effectiveness. MyoTape helps maintain lip closure alongside CPAP use.

**Long COVID**: Several MyoTape customers report using the product to support breathing retraining and better sleep during long COVID recovery.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Is MyoTape safe for people with sleep apnea?**
Yes. MyoTape's patented design surrounds the lips rather than sealing them. The mouth can always be opened — including for mouth puffing, which is essential for many sleep apnea sufferers. MyoTape is commonly used alongside CPAP to prevent air leaks. It is not a substitute for CPAP in diagnosed moderate-to-severe sleep apnea.

**What makes MyoTape different from regular mouth tape?**
Conventional mouth tape seals the lips shut. MyoTape surrounds the mouth with gentle elastic tension — the lips are encouraged closed but can always open freely. This makes it significantly less claustrophobic and safer, particularly for those with sleep apnea, anxiety, or nasal congestion.

**Is MyoTape safe for children?**
Yes. There is a dedicated kids size with child-appropriate sizing and hypoallergenic adhesive. The design allows emergency mouth opening at all times. Safe for overnight use.

**Can I use MyoTape with a beard?**
Yes. MyoTape for Beards is specifically designed for all facial hair lengths. The surrounding design does not require adhesion across beard hair.

**How do I know which size to choose?**
Measure mouth width in millimetres. Standard adult: 50mm+. Small: 42–55mm. Kids: aged 4+.

**Can MyoTape be used during the day?**
Yes — for 30 minutes to 2 hours during sedentary activities such as watching TV, reading, or desk work. This accelerates the training of nasal breathing habits and strengthens the orbicularis oris muscle.

**Is MyoTape scientifically backed?**
Yes. It was developed by Patrick McKeown, Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, TEDx speaker, and author of eleven books on breathing science. The method is grounded in peer-reviewed research on nasal breathing physiology, CO2 regulation, and sleep-disordered breathing.

**How many strips per pack?**
Packs are available in 30-night trial packs and larger supply options. Check individual product pages for current pack sizes and bundle pricing.

**Does MyoTape leave residue?**
The standard formula is designed for clean removal. The sensitive skin formula uses a gentler adhesive specifically to reduce residue and irritation. Some customers find using a small amount of water at removal time helps further.

**Can I use MyoTape alongside a CPAP machine?**
Yes. Many CPAP users use MyoTape to maintain lip closure, which reduces air leaks with nasal masks and improves therapy effectiveness. The mouth can always open if needed.
